Angel (vampire form w/ a soul)
Angelus (vampire form w/out a soul)
Liam (when he was a human)
(BIO)

In 1727 Liam was born and lived in Galway, Ireland and lived a rather wild life filled with over-drinking and barroom brawls, from what we can tell from Becoming Part 1&2 (BtVS S2). Liam also comes across as a rather unpleasant, rough and roguish man, nothing at all like Angel is today. In 1753, Liam met Darla and was quickly turned into Angelus in a back ally. This makes him about 250 years old as a vampire and 276 years old when you include his human life.

London 1760 in The Master's Lair. Angelus stands before the Master, who is seated on a large, carved chair.
MASTER: Angelus… the Latinate for angel. (laughs) It’s marvelous.
Darla stands beside the Master, smiling.
DARLA: His name would already be legend in his home village had he left anyone alive there to tell the tale.
The Master caresses Darla’s hand.
MASTER: Ah, you had a nice trip. I’m so glad.
DARLA: On the way back, we cut a bloody swath through South Wales and northern England. He was magnificent.
Darla (S2,Ep) on AtS

Angel: Latin angelus; Greek aggelos; from the Hebrew for "one going" or "one sent"; messenger Source

Liam - the source is "Uilleam", a Gaelic name meaning "determined protector."

Liam (Origin: Irish Gaelic; Determined guardian. Also a nickname for William.) Source

William (Origin: Teutonic; A strong and resolute protector.) Source

"Liam is the Irish form of William. William was originally a Germanic name, will + helm, meaning will + helmet and probably suggesting strong protection. The Normans took the name to England in 1066 in the form of Guillaume, and Liam is probably an Irish version of this, rather than the second half of William."

For 150 years he was the Scourge of Europe killing his way across Europe. In 1898, in Borsa, Romania Darla brought Angelus a birthday present, a Romani (Gypsy) girl (Five By Five, S1,Ep18) At this time Darla and Angelus travel together without their children, Spike and Drusilla. Angelus fed from the young woman and killed her in front of Darla. The young woman was the favorite daughter within her clan and so Angelus was soon cursed with a spell that returned his soul to him. Along with the soul came all of the guilt that comes with his killing spree of 145 years. When Darla figures out that Angelus had his soul returned she threatens to kill him and tosses him out of their apartment.

During the 140+ years he traveled with Darla, Drusilla and Spike, tormenting, terrifying and ruthlessly killing babies, children, women and men, there ages didn't matter only the amount of enjoyment he could receive through their suffering before he disposed of them.

"The curse. Angel is meant to suffer, not to live as human. One moment of true happiness, of contentment, one moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him."
Enyos, Jenny Calendar's uncle (see full scene)

Angel suffers with his guilt over the acts he has committed as a vampire from 1898 until about 1998 when he meets Whistler (a demon that helps The Powers That Be with keeping the balance of good and evil). Whistler shows him Buffy for the first time when she's approached by her first Watcher. Angel sees how hard Buffy's life is and will become, so he cleans up his act in order to help her fight "the good fight". (see both scenes below, Becoming (Part I) - S2, Ep21)

During mid-season 2 (Surprise, S2,Ep13) on Buffy's 17th Birthday she sleeps with Angel, not knowing about the curse and what might happen if he experiences one moment of true happiness. Right after they make love for the first time (I Will Remember You -S1, Ep8 of AtS, they sleep together in the alternate day they live together) Angel looses his soul and becomes Angelus (Innocence, S2,Ep14) once more. As Angelus he seems even more vicious and cruel then before, his demon has time to make up for.

He chases after Buffy, joins up with two of his children (Spike and Drusilla), takes Drusilla back into his bed (making Spike angry and jealous), stalks and taunts Buffy, kills Jenny Calendar, tortures Giles and tries to bring the end of the world with The Judge. Just before his plan to end the world succeeds his soul is restored by Willow and Buffy is forced to kill him (even knowing it's not Angelus, but her love, Angel) to save the world. He spends about 100 years in a hell dimension and returns like a crazed animal. Buffy secretly helps him back to health. Now Angel has more crimes to atone for (including killing Gile's love, Jenny) and after helping Buffy save Sunnydale from the Mayor, he leaves for L.A.

And so the television series Angel begins and a whole new story. Angel knows he is part of the big picture to save mankind at some future point. He helps the helpless to atone for his past, both of Liam and Angelus.

It's hard to say if Liam was an innocent before he started to fight and drink heavily. In The Prodigal (S1,Ep15) we see how Liam and his father interact. From what is said it seems that Liam's father was hard on him, putting him down constantly and expecting only the worst of him. Liam implies that the way his father treated and spoke to him all those years was what he became in order to fulfil what was said to him. Just before his death, his father is shocked to find out that Liam felt that he was being hard on his son and that Liam only became the man that he created with his words and deeds towards Liam.

The only time that it's ever mentioned that Liam could have been a different man then what he became, maybe he wouldn't have accepted Darla's offer of adventure if things turned out differently, was in The Prodigal (S1,Ep15).

So what kind of "fallen angel" is Angel? Liam did end up leading a roguish life and not a 'good' one or that of an innocent, but did he ever really have a chance to live any other way? If Liam didn't have his father treating him the way he did would he have been a different man?

The soul that he has as Angel is Liam's, a not-so-good man in deed, so why would Liam (Angel w/ his soul) be so pained by what his soulless body had done as Angelus when a demon inhabited it? What makes Angel with a soul (which is Liam) so "good" now compared to when he was Liam before he was turned by Darla?

Angelus did not choose to be "good" (become Angel) or to stop his killing spree, he was forced both times when his soul was returned to him without his consent unlike Spike who went on a journey and passed three deadly trials to get his soul because of his love for Buffy.

It is true that Spike was forced to receive the chip that basically 'defanged' him and prevented him from killing humans, much like Angelus receiving a soul by force. It wasn't until about a year after receiving it, Out of My Mind (S5,Ep4), that Spike dreams about kissing Buffy and admits to loving her. In Fool For Love, Spike actually tries to kiss Buffy and is rejected by her.

Anya existed as a vengeance demon for about 6 to 7 times the number of years that Angelus reigned terror across Europe and the Far East. She existed 9 times longer then even Spike and his killing spree with Angelus, Darla and Drusilla. I do not recall Anya ever, not even up to the wedding, showing any sense of guilt for what she had done. All of her actions as a vengeance demon was by her own choice.

Anyanka was conscious of her choices to grant the wishes no matter how extreme a reaction the scorned women had. Regardless of this and her being a demon Xander and Buffy except her. Xander has given both Angel and Spike a great deal of hassle over their pasts and that's for a fraction of the time that Anya lived. Even Buffy hardly had any real problems about it until 'Selfless' (S7,Ep5). So why did Xander give Angel and Spike grief over their pasts when they didn't choose to become vampires? How could Xander sleep at night next to Anya and never feel any guilt or grief over her actions?

The tricky thing with any of the vampires on BtVS and AtS (Angel, Spike, Darla and Drusilla) is that they all have done a hundred plus years of murder and nothing can ever really redeem them. Even if their 'good' actions are done selflessly and if they saved millions of lives, how can you ever make it up to the thousands that they hunted, tortured and killed? They can be 'fallen angels' and try to redeem themselves, but they do so with the knowledge that nothing could make up for their past.

DARLA: No? It’s really not, is it? We did so many terrible things together. So much destruction, so much pain. We can’t make up for any of it. You know that, don’t you?
ANGEL: Yes.
"Lullaby" (S3,Ep9)

ANGEL: Well, that thing that Billy brought out in others? The hatred and anger… that’s something I lost a long time ago.
CORDELIA: Even when you were evil?
ANGEL: I never hated my victims. I never killed out of anger. It was always about the pain and the pleasure.
CORDELIA: Huh. So I guess you could say that your demoness makes you less petty than humans. Almost noble. I mean, in a twisted, dark and really disturbing kind of way.
ANGEL: Thanks.
"Billy" (S3,Ep6)

(after fighting the crazy neo-slayer)
ANGEL
: (walks in) A lot of pain?
SPIKE: More than I'd like. But not as much as you would. Just what I deserve.
ANGEL: (sighs) I didn't say that.
SPIKE: No. I did. The lass thought I killed her family. And I'm supposed to what, complain 'cause hers wasn't one of the hundreds of families I did kill? I'm not sayin' you're right... 'cause, uh... I'm physically incapable of saying that. But, uh... for a demon... I never did think that much about the nature of evil. No. Just threw myself in. Thought it was a party. I liked the rush. I liked the crunch. Never did look back at the victims.
ANGEL: I couldn't take my eyes off them. I was only in it for the evil. It was everything to me. It was art. The destruction of a human being. I would've considered Dana a masterpiece.
(...)
ANGEL: She's an innocent victim.
SPIKE: So were we... once upon a time.
ANGEL: Once upon a time.
"Damage" (S5,Ep11)

"Already, in our little circle, in our little show, with its little prophecy, we have serious questions about the vampire with a soul who would be champion.
Is it Angel, as we always assumed, or Spike?
It has been my feeling for some time that Spike’s path to redemption, specifically his intention to be redeemed against his nature, is more worthy of the prophecies. That Angel’s mantel was forced upon him, and, no matter how strong a force of good he may be, he is not as worthy.
Or, perhaps, worthy enough."

"Storyteller: Self-Portrait" article by Hunter Maxin 2/25/2003
based on the episode "Storyteller" from ScoopMe!

"This show is really about redemption and seeing a man come to grips with his own fate and accepting that rather then masking it and becoming, you know, human again, having a chance because it was taken away from him at such a yound age. He's been around for 250 some years now, so and he's been living with this curse and it was forseable when he was not this evil, demon person and because I think that if he had a second chance then maybe he'd have been different. So I think he's actually looking for some salvation, some worth, some cause to try to give back what he's taken."
David Boreanaz in an interview on HyperSpace, December 2003

Allen Francis Doyle: Once upon a time there was a vampire. And he was the meanest vampire in all the land. All the other vampires were afraid of him, he was such a bastard. Then one day he's cursed by gypsies. They restore his human soul. And all of a sudden he's mad with guilt... it's a fairly dull tale. It needs a little sex is my feeling. So, sure enough, enter the girl. Pretty little blonde thing, Vampire Slayer by trade, and our vampire fell madly in love with her. Eventually the two of them get fleshy with one another. The technical term is "perfect happiness." But when our boy gets there, he goes bad again. So when he gets his soul back for a second time, he figures he can't be anywhere near Miss-Young-Puppy-Eyes without endangering them both. So, what does he do? He takes off. Goes to L.A. to fight evil and atone for his crimes. He's a shadow. A faceless champion of the hapless human race.

Angel: Well, I guess I kind of worked it out. If there's no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters... then all that matters is what we do. 'Cause that's all there is. What we do. Now. Today. I fought for so long, for redemption, for a reward, and finally just to beat the other guy, but I never got it.
Kate Lockley: And now you do?
Angel: Not all of it. All I want to do is help. I wanna help because people shouldn't suffer as they do. Because, if there isn't any bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world.
Kate Lockley: Yikes. It sounds like you had an epiphany.
Angel: I keep saying that. No one listens.
Connor: Look, I'm telling the truth, okay?
Angel: I know. I can tell. I've done enough lying for me to tell the difference. Truth has a better sound to it. Plus the nasal, you know? Get up. What you did to me was unbelievable Connor. Then, I got stuck in a hell dimension by my girlfriend one time for a hundred years, so a few months under the ocean actually gave me some perspective. Kind of a M.C. Esher perspective. But I did get time to think. About us. About the world. Nothing in the world is the way it aught to be. It's harsh. And cruel. That's why there's us. Champions. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done, suffered, or even if we make a difference, we live as though the world were as it should be. To show it what it can be. You're not apart of that yet. I hope you will be, I love you Connor. Now get out of my house.
"What's a blessing about this character is I can really exercise my chops," he says. "I don't know if I want him to stay bad. I want him to be well-balanced. It's almost like he's a recovering alcoholic, [who sometimes] goes off the wagon." David Boreanaz (Source)

The Curse

BUFFY: I know you're there. And I know what you are.
ANGEL: Do you? I'm just an animal, right?
BUFFY: You're not an animal. Animals I like.
ANGEL: Let's get it done!
(they scuffle, Buffy fixes her crossbow on him)
ANGEL: C'mon! Don't go soft on me now!
(Buffy launches the bolt. It hits the wall next to him.)
ANGEL: Little wide.
BUFFY: Why? Why didn't you just attack me when you had the chance? Was it a joke? To make me feel for you and then... I've killed a lot of vampires. I've never hated one before.
ANGEL: Feels good, doesn't it? Feels simple.
BUFFY: I invited you into my home and then you attacked my family!
ANGEL: Why not? I killed mine. I killed their friends... and their friend's children... For a hundred years I offered ugly death to everyone I met, and I did it with a song in my heart.
BUFFY: What changed?
ANGEL: Fed on a girl about your age... beautiful... dumb as a post... but a favorite among her clan.
BUFFY: Her clan?
ANGEL: Romany. Gypsies. The elders conjured the perfect punishment for me. They restored my soul.
BUFFY: What, they were all out of boils and blinding torment?
ANGEL: When you become a vampire the demon takes your body, but it doesn't get your soul. That's gone! No conscience, no remorse... It's an easy way to live. You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done... and to care. I haven't fed on a living human being since that day.
BUFFY: So you started with my mom?
ANGEL: I didn't bite her.
BUFFY: Then why didn't you say something?
ANGEL: But I wanted to. I can walk like a man, but I'm not one. I wanted to kill you tonight.
(She puts the bow down on the floor and approaches him. She offers her neck.)
BUFFY: Go ahead. Not as easy as it looks.

Angel (S1, Ep7)

The Curse

ENYOS: You know what it is, this thing vengeance?
JENNY: Uncle, I have served you. I have been faithful. I need to know...
ENYOS: (interrupts) To the modern man vengeance is a verb, an idea. Payback. One thing for another. Like commerce. Not with us. Vengeance is a living thing. It passes through generations. It commands. It kills.
JENNY: You told me to watch Angel. You told me to keep him from the Slayer. I tried. But there are other factors. There are terrible things happening here that we cannot control.
ENYOS: We control nothing. We are not wizards, Janna. We merely play our part.
JENNY: Angel could be of help to us. I mean, he may be the only chance we have to stop the Judge.
ENYOS: It is too late for that.
JENNY: Why?
ENYOS: The curse. Angel is meant to suffer, not to live as human. One moment of true happiness, of contentment, one moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him.
JENNY: Then, if somehow, if... if it's happened... then Angelus is back.
ENYOS: I hoped to stop it. But I realize now it was arranged to be so.
JENNY: Buffy loves him.
ENYOS: And now she will have to kill him.
JENNY: Unless he kills her first! Uncle, this is insanity! People are going to die.
ENYOS: Yes. It is not justice we serve. It is vengeance.
JENNY: You are a fool. We're all fools.

Innocence (S2, Ep14)

The Slayer

set in Manhattan, 1996

WHISTLER: God, are you disgusting. This is really an unforgettable smell. This is the stench of death you're giving off here. And the look says, uh... Crazy Homeless Guy. It's not good.
ANGEL: (angrily) Get away from me.
WHISTLER: What are you gonna do, bite me? Horrors! A vampire! Ah, but you wouldn't bite me on account of your poor, tortured soul. It's so sad, a vampire with a soul. It's so poignant.
ANGEL: Who are you?
WHISTLER: Let's take a walk.
(cut to them walking)
WHISTLER: What are you eating? Like, a rat once a month? Hey! Look, you're skin and bones here! Butcher shops are throwing away more blood in a day than you could stand. Good blood. You lived in the world a little bit, you'd know that.
ANGEL: I wanna know who you are.
WHISTLER: And I wanna know who *you* are.
ANGEL: You already do.
WHISTLER: Not yet. But I'm looking to find out. 'Cause you could go either way here.
ANGEL: I don't understand you.
WHISTLER: Nobody understands me. That's my curse. (to hot-dog vendor) Dog me. Mustard. (to Angel) My name's Whistler.
VENDOR: Here you go.
WHISTLER: Thanks. (to Angel) Anyway, lately it is. (takes a bite) Mm.
ANGEL: You're not a vampire.
WHISTLER: A demon... technically. I mean, I'm not a bad guy. Not all demons are dedicated to the destruction of all life.
ANGEL: Whadaya mean, I can go either way?
WHISTLER: I mean that you can become an even more useless rodent than you already are, or you can become someone. A person. Someone to be counted.
ANGEL: I just wanna be left alone.
WHISTLER: Well, yeah, you've been left alone for, what, ninety years already. And what a package you are. The Stink Guy!
ANGEL: What do you want from me?
WHISTLER: I want you to see something. We'd have to leave now. You see, and then you tell me what you wanna do.
ANGEL: Where is it?
(...)
WHISTLER: She's gonna have it tough, that Slayer. She's just a kid. The world's full of big, bad things.
ANGEL: I wanna help her. I want... I wanna become someone.
WHISTLER: God, jeez, look at you. She must be prettier than the last Slayer. This isn't gonna be easy. The more you live in this world, the more you see how apart from it you really are. And this is dangerous work. Right now, you couldn't go three rounds with a fruit fly!
ANGEL: I wanna learn from you.
WHISTLER: Alright.
ANGEL: But I don't wanna dress like you.
WHISTLER: Again, you're annoying me. You're lucky we need you on our side.

Becoming (Part I) (S2, Ep21)

Sunrise in Galway, Ireland 1753. A maid servant is filling a pitcher with water at a well. Angel is leaning against the wall of the house in the shadow looking disheveled.
Angel: “Anna.”
Anna: “Master Liam?”
Angel: “Anna, come closer.”
Anna: “Master Liam, your father...”
Angel: “Will be off to church by now, repenting of his sins, and well he should. Closer, Anna.”
Anna: “Why do you keep to the shadows, sir? Are you not well?”
Angel: “The light. It bothers my eyes just now.”
Angel’s dad: “And I know the reason why. (Pushes Angel out into the sunlight of the courtyard) Up again all night, is it? Drinking and whoring. I smell the stink of it on you.” Angel picks himself up “And a good morning to you, father.”
Dad: “You’re a disgrace.”
Angel: “If you say so, father.”
Dad: “Oh, I do. I do say so. Have you not had enough debauchery for one night? Must you corrupt the servants as well?”
Angel: “Servant, father. We have *one* servant. Anyway, - everyone gets corrupted, - but I find some forms of corruption - are more pleasant...”
His Dad hits Angel hard across the face, making him spin around.
Dad: “I am ashamed to call you my son. You’re a lay-about and a scoundrel and you’ll never amount to anything more than that.”
He wipes the blood off his lip.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Darla watching Angel in a tavern fight.
Darla to maid: “Who is he?”
Maid: “Who, that one?”
Angel takes a drink from his mug of ale and goes back to fighting.
Darla: “Yes. - He’s magnificent.”
Maid: “Oh, yeah, God’s gift, alright.”
Darla: “Really? I’ve never known God to be so generous.”
Maid: “Oh, his lies sound pretty when the stars are out. - But he forgets every promise he’s made when the sun comes up again.”
Darla: (as Angel smiles at her) “That wouldn’t really be a problem for me actually.”
Angel starts walking towards Darla when someone brakes a bottle over his head.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Angel of the past stumbling up to his mother and little sister in his home.
Dad: (from behind him): “Liam! You’ll do as I say.”
Angel: (to his little sister) “Sweet Kathy. No tears. We’ll meet again.”
Dad: “Defy me now, you won’t. - Not as long as I live.
Angel: “You’ll want to move away from the door now, father.”
Dad: “Go through it, but don’t ever expect to come back.
Angel: “As you wish, father. Always, *just* as you wish.”
Dad: “It’s a son I wished for – a man – instead God gave me you! A terrible disappointment.”
Angel: “Disappointment? A more dutiful son you couldn’t have asked for. My whole life you’ve told me in word, in glance, what it is you required of me, and I’ve lived down to your every expectations, now haven’t I?
Dad: “That’s madness!”
Angel: “No. The madness is that I couldn’t fail enough for you. But we’ll fix that now, won’t we?
Dad: “I fear for you, lad.”
Angel: “And is that the only thing you can find in your heart for me now, father?”
Dad: “Who’ll take you in, huh? No one!”
Angel: “I’ll not lack for a place to sleep, I can tell you that. Out of my way.
Dad: “I was never in your way, boy.
Angel opens the door and storms out.
Dad: “If you’ll go courting trouble, you’re sure to find it!”
Angel slams the door.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Cut to the barmaid at the tavern smiling as Angel picks her up. Cut to Darla scratching her chest to make it bleed. Cut to the barmaid. Cut to Darla in the alley. Cut to the Barmaid feeding Angel some grapes.
Darla voice over: “You know what to do. Darling boy.”
Cut to Angel following Darla into the alley.
Darla voice over: “I could show you – things you’ve never seen.”
Darla bites him and his eyes pop open. He’s knees give out and Darla pushes his mouth on top of the bloody scratch on her chest.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Darla Sires Angelus

Galway, Ireland, 1753

ANGEL: (drunk, with an Irish accent) We'll be back when we've found a bit more cash money! Keep the girls warm! (to friend) Come on. We'll sneak in and take some of me father's silver. He'll never miss it. He eats with his hands, the pig. (friend passes out) Ah. Why don't you rest right here.
Spies Darla, follows her.
ANGEL: So, I'd ask myself... What's a lady of your station doing alone in an alley with the reputation that this one has?
Darla: Maybe she's lonely.
ANGEL: In that case, I'd offer myself as escort to protect you from harm and to while away the dull hours.
Darla: You're very gracious.
ANGEL: Hm. It's often been said.
Darla: Are you certain you're up to the challenge?
ANGEL: Milady, you'll find that with the exception of an honest day's work, there's no challenge I'm not prepared to face. Oh... But you're a pretty thing. Where are you from?
Darla: Around. Everywhere.
ANGEL: I never been anywhere myself. Always wanted to see the world, but...
Darla: I could show you.
ANGEL: Could you, then?
Darla: Things you've never seen, never even heard of.
ANGEL: Sounds exciting.
Darla: It is. And frightening.
ANGEL: I'm not afraid. Show me. Show me your world.
Darla: Close your eyes.

Becoming (Part I) (S2, Ep21)

Cut to Angel’s funeral in 1753. Angel’s mom and sister are crying while his dad stands looking straight ahead.
Priest: “Taken too soon from the bosom of his family, a man of just 20 years and 6, Liam was well-loved by everyone he met. (?) Receive this your humble servant. We pray that you may take his eternal soul into your care, Father.”
Cut to the grave being filled in. The only mourner still standing beside the grave is his father, still staring straight ahead.
Cut to the grave stone. 1727 – 1753 Beloved Son.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Cut to Darla walking up to Angel’s fresh grave that night. A hand breaks through the earth, Angel slowly claws his way out as Darla waits with a smile.
Darla: (helps Angel to his feet) “Welcome to my world. It hurts, I know, but not for long. Birth is always painful.”
Angel: (breathing hard) “I could feel them – above me – as I slept in the earth. - Their heartbeats – their blood - coursing - through their veins.”
Darla: (smiles) “Yes.”
Angel: “Was it a dream?”
Darla: “A dream for you. Soon – their nightmare.”
Groundskeeper comes up holding a lantern.
Groundskeeper: “You there! (Sees the disturbed grave) What have you done? - Grave robbers!”
Angel slowly walks towards him, looks back at Darla who nods at him.
Darla: “You know what to do.”
Angel turns back and morphs into vamp face.
Groundskeeper: “Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, give us this day our daily...” Screams as Angel bites him. After a moment Angel breaks off to look at Darla again, then finishes draining the guy and drops him. He takes a couple deep breaths then turns back to Darla in human face.
Darla: “It all makes sense now, doesn’t it?”
Angel: “Perfect sense.”
Darla: “You can do anything, have anyone in the village. Who will it be?”
Angel: “Any one? (Darla nods) I thought I’d take the village.”

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Cut to Angel’s father nailing up his window from the inside.
Angel: “You’re no different from the rest of them, - are you, father? (His father spins around and stares at him) Cowering in their houses – boarding up the windows – smearing that foul herb in the doorways. You’d think something evil – and vile – and monstrous - had taken to terrorizing this village –and everyone in it.”
Dad: “Be gone, unclean thing! A demon can not enter a home where it’s not welcome. He must be invited!”
Angel: “That’s true. - But I was invited.”
Angel looks to the doorway. His father turns and sees little Kathy slumped against the wall.
Dad: “Och!”
Angel: “She thought I returned to her – an angel.”
Dad spins around and charges Angel with the hammer in his hand.
Dad: “Murderer!”
Angel easily pushes the attack aside, making his dad fall to the ground.
Angel: “Strange. - Somehow you seemed taller when I was alive.”
Dad: (flattens himself up against the wall) “Lord, bind this demon now.”
Angel: “To think I ever let such a tiny, trembling thing make me feel the way you did.”
Dad: (crosses himself) “I pray ye, give me your protection, Father.”
Angel: “You told me I wasn’t a man. (Slowly stalks closer to his dad) You told me I was nothing. – and I believed you. You said I’d never amount to anything. (His dad stares at him with wide-open eyes) Well, you were wrong. (Angel morphs into vamp face) You see, father? - I have made something out of myself after all.
Angel puts a hand over his father’s face and bites him. They slowly slide down the wall and out of the picture.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

Darla: “This contest is ended, is it?”
Angel has his feet up on the table playing with his father’s pipe. His family lies dead around him.
Angel: “Now I’ve won.
Darla: “You’re sure?”
Angel: (puts his feet down and picks up a mug of ale) “Of course. I proved who had the power here.
Darla: “You think?”
Angel: “What?”
Darla: “You’re victory over him took but moments.
Angel: (looks over at the body of his father and gets up) “Yes?”
Darla: “But his defeat of you will last life times.
Angel: “What are you talking about? He can’t defeat me now.”
Darla: “Nor can he ever approve of you – in this world or any other. - What we once were informs all that we have become. (Angel looks at his father’s body) The same love will infect our hearts – even if they no longer beat. (Angel looks at his mother’s and his sister’s body) Simple death won’t change that.
Angel: “Love? - Is this the work of love?
Darla: (steps closer and smiles up at him) “Darling boy. - So young. Still so very young.

The Prodigal (S1,Ep15)

ANGEL: Oh, god. Oh, god.
DARLA: Yes. Yes, I know. It was the same for me. The soul is gone but it leaves a bitterness. It’ll pass.
Angel looks up over his shoulder at Darla. Climbs to his feet and staggers a step backward, staring at her.
DARLA: What you need is a fresh kill. Hot human blood will wash away the foul memory of it. I promise.
Darla reaches up to caress Angel’s cheek but his hand shoots up and catches her wrist.
DARLA: What? What is it?
ANGEL: You saved me.
DARLA: Yes. But I was going to kill you tonight, take you out of this world the same way I brought you into it. But I didn’t have to. You gave yourself over so completely, Angelus. I felt you surrender.
Angel shakes his head slightly.
ANGEL: I gave you everything I had left.
DARLA: (smiles) Yes.
ANGEL: I am so sorry.
DARLA: You don’t have to be.
ANGEL: But I am.
He lays her hand alongside his face.
ANGEL: I am sorry.
DARLA: What?
ANGEL: I am sorry, Darla.
Darla realizes and shakes her head in denial.
DARLA: No…
ANGEL: You saved me. Sorry I couldn’t do the same for you.
DARLA: Let go of me!
She pulls her hand free and backs away.
DARLA: You still have a soul.
Darla runs back into the bedroom and stares at the rumpled bed. She rounds on Angel, who has followed her in.
DARLA: But we…
ANGEL: Yeah.
Angel begins to dress.
DARLA: And you…
ANGEL: I know.
DARLA: Then I…
ANGEL: Three times.
DARLA: You’re not evil. I don’t understand. Was I… was it… not good? (beat) Well, I don’t accept that. You cannot tell me that wasn’t perfect. Not only have I been around for four hundred years but I used to do this professionally. And that was perfect. We’ll go again.
She takes him by the arm and tries to drag him back to bed. Angel pulls free and gets up, backing away.
ANGEL: No. No. We can’t. You know we can’t. We’re finished.
DARLA: Finished? Why? What? Because you suddenly decide? You know an hour ago you wanted this. You weren’t tricked into anything. I didn’t seduce you. You wanted it!
ANGEL: Yeah. And it was perfect, Darla. It was perfect despair.
Darla stares at him in disbelief.
ANGEL: And you were the reason. You’ve always been the reason. You were the thing that made me what I am and I thought if I could save you, I’d somehow save myself but I was wrong. And when I failed—
DARLA: Stop it!
ANGEL: When I failed, you saved me. And I have to thank you for that. There is nothing I can do for you now, Darla. I can’t even hate you.
DARLA: You knew this would happen, didn’t you? You made me trust you! You made me believe!
Darla’s words echo in Angel’s head: Kate’s voice earlier in the evening over his answering machine.
KATE (o.s.) You made me trust you. You made me believe.
Angel turns to go.
ANGEL: We’re done. Let yourself out.
Darla rushes after him, picking up a piece of wood and brandishing it like a stake.
DARLA: Where are you going?
Angel turns and catches her wrist on the down swing.
ANGEL: You did me a favor tonight. Now I’m going to do one for you. Get dressed and get out… because the next time I see you I will have to kill you.
Angel turns and walks out leaving Darla staring after him, shocked and hurt.
