The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

This is a bit after Buffy rescued Spike from The First Evil and his followers. They captured Spike to use his blood to open up the Hellmouth from under Sunnydale high school. It's the first sign that there is a major problem with Spike's chip and that he still has it.

Buffy descends the stairs into the basement and approaches SPIKE who has chained himself
to the wall.

BUFFY: Hey.
SPIKE: Hey.
BUFFY: Giles is off on the retreat.
SPIKE: It’ll give us all a chance for a breather, eh?
BUFFY: From Giles?
SPIKE: From the constant pitter-patter of clomping teenage girlie feet.
BUFFY: (coy) I have no idea what you’re talking about.
SPIKE: Come off it.
BUFFY: I enjoy my responsibility as mentor, role model, life guide… oh, my god! I can’t believe I have my bathroom all to myself for two whole days.
SPIKE: It’s like a bloody war zone up there. And not in a good way.
BUFFY: Have you seen the kitchen since they’ve been here?
SPIKE: I’m just trying to stay out of their way.
BUFFY: (re: chains) I noticed.
SPIKE: This is better. Believe me, it’s safer.
BUFFY: Okay. But you’ve been fine, in close contact with the girls.
SPIKE: With you by my side, yeah. But you wouldn’t let me hurt one of them. And that’s the way it’s going to be until we’re sure The First is done making me its bitch. Either we’re together or I’m on the leash.
BUFFY: We just need to make sure the trigger’s deactivated, then. We’ve got a couple of days. Lack of pitter-patter and all.
SPIKE: Buffy…
BUFFY: What?
SPIKE: Ow.
BUFFY: Ow?
Spike suddenly yells in pain, grabs his head and slams back against the wall.
BUFFY: What’s wrong? Spike, what is going on?
SPIKE: (gasps) The chip! God… why would…
He recoils in agony again, while Buffy looks on, helpless.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Buffy asks Willow for some help on finding info on the chip and Willow brings up Buffy's feelings for Spike.

Buffy enters from the basement while Willow makes tea.
WILLOW: Hey, how is he?
BUFFY: In the goes part of “comes and goes”.
WILLOW: Well, there seems to be a definite lack of screaming. That has to be good.
BUFFY: You’d think. (re: tea) That for the other patient?
WILLOW: Yeah. Thought I’d bring her some tea. Help her feel better.
BUFFY: (knowing) Mm-hmm.
WILLOW: (defensive) It’s just tea.
Buffy laughs good-naturedly, then sobers again.
BUFFY: Will, how much do you know about the chip?
WILLOW: Spike’s chip? Well, I remember trying to dig up stuff back then but… turns out when a secret government agency studies vampires and puts chips in their brains that keep them from hurting people, they don’t really build web sites. Why?
BUFFY: Even with the chip, Spike was able to hurt all those people when he was brainwashed.
WILLOW: Yeah, but he was under the control of The First.
BUFFY: Maybe something’s wrong with it.
WILLOW: The chip was misfiring all on its own, then. Well, this’ll be fun.
BUFFY: Remember when things used to be nice and boring?
WILLOW: (considers) No.
She heads for the stairs with the tea.
BUFFY: (smiles) Have fun delivering the tea.
WILLOW: Okay, not when you make it sound all dirty like that. It’s just tea.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Buffy decides that it has gotten to bad and she decides to ask Riley for help.

Buffy descends the stairs, holding a clean towel. She finds Spike slumped against the wall, breathing labored, head in his hands. He lifts his head as she sits down next to him. He’s clammy and his nose is bleeding profusely now.
SPIKE: Popped another blood vessel, I think.
She hands him the towel and he wipes the blood from his face.
BUFFY: There’s gotta be a reason why the chip is going all wonky. Maybe it’s related to the trigger… or maybe it has something to do with the new soul.
SPIKE: Or maybe I wasn’t meant to last this long. One more thing you and I have in common, eh, pet?
BUFFY: Well, we’ll fix it. We’ll hit serious research mode—
SPIKE: Good. Try “behavioral modification software through the ages.”
BUFFY: Okay, you’re right, it’s not a book thing. It’s a phone thing.
SPIKE: Who’re you gonna call? (beat) God, that phrase is never going to be usable again, is it?
BUFFY: Doubt it.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Buffy calls the last number she had for Riley and tries to leave a message for him to contact her.

Spike sits on the stairs looking pained while Buffy talks on the phone in the living room.
BUFFY: (into phone) Yes. Agent Finn. Riley. Tell him we’re having a problem with Spike’s chip. (beat) No, his chip. (beat) Spike.
SPIKE: Listen, pet…
BUFFY: (into phone) No, no, Finn is his last name. Yes. (beat) Well, did he used to work there and maybe he got transferred or… oh. Is this actually a flower shop or is this one of those things where I’m supposed to play along to show I know it’s really Secret Ops? (beat) Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. Spike rocks back, his head in agony again.
BUFFY: (into phone) Okay, right. Well, if some guy named Finn shows up to buy flowers… yeah. Thanks. She hangs up and turns to Spike.
BUFFY: Wrong number. Or a giant government conspiracy. One of those. (off his look) Spike?
SPIKE: This one seemed easier than the others. See? Probably just going to fade…
He clenches his jaw and screams in agony.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

They decide to go get what they need to help Spike.

BUFFY: Spike?
SPIKE: Buffy…
BUFFY: I’m right here.
He sits up, woozy.
SPIKE: The chip fired again.
BUFFY: I kinda figured.
Kennedy slips away, unnoticed, into the dining room and through the kitchen, then out the back door.
BUFFY: Maybe they’ll call back. Maybe they’ll send help.
SPIKE: Maybe we can’t wait.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

They go to the old Innitiative base under the college and try and get in to find something for Spike.

Buffy’s and Spike stand in the familiar bushes on the college campus and shrubs that hide the entrance to the Initiative. Spike is holding up well, putting up a brave front, but he’s getting worse.
SPIKE: Are you sure you still want to go back in this place with me?
BUFFY: (shrugs) Eh. Nothing good on TV tonight.
Spike nods and kneels down. He pulls the bushes aside, tearing up the dirt.
SPIKE: Here we are.
BUFFY: Yep. Here we are. You think the stuff’s still good?
SPIKE: I don’t know. Worked pretty good when the Initiative held me captive here. Every time I’d get a little… rambunctious, the chip would kick in, I’d feel like my head was going to explode, they’d dope me up and everything would be all daffodils and teddy bears. For a couple of hours, anyway.
BUFFY: Maybe we should search for files and stuff. You know, find out everything we can about the chip. Shelf life.
SPIKE: I’ll take whatever I can get.
He’s hit a metal grate in the dirt.
BUFFY: Ready?
Spike nods and pulls hard on the grate. It comes up, dirt pouring off it.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Dark. Cluttered. Threatening. Chunks of concrete crumble down from above and crash to the floor. A moment later, two shadowy figures— Buffy and Spike— drop from the ceiling. Two flashlights pierce the blackness. Buffy and Spike react to the smell—
the smell of dead bodies left for over three years.

BUFFY: Be careful. Oh, god. They just left them.
SPIKE: They just sealed the place off. Left everything as it was.
BUFFY: I’m thinking brief stay.
SPIKE: Yeah, you’re not wrong. I think I can get us to the Med Lab, find the drug.
As they move away, something run across frame, behind their backs… dark, dangerous.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Buffy and Spike move cautiously through the wrecked complex. They freeze, tensed, as a furtive noise sounds in the darkness.
SPIKE: You hear that?
BUFFY: Yep.
SPIKE: Think something survived?
BUFFY: Sounds like.
SPIKE: You see where?
BUFFY: No, it sounded like it was coming from over there. Whatever it is, it’s not—
She directs her flashlight into the corner but there’s nothing but dusty, crumbling walls.
It comes again, this time from the opposite side. Buffy and Spike whip around and aim their flashlights toward the noise. Nothing.

Suddenly, the same dark, shadow-like thing careens into Buffy from the side and knocks her off her feet. Spike leaps to her aid as her flashlight skitters across the floor.
SPIKE: Buffy!

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Spike leaps over bodies and equipment o find Buffy struggling under the monster. Spike’s flashlight reveals its monstrous form: built like a fireplug,
compact but clearly agile. It has Buffy pinned.
Spike runs to her aid but is only halfway there when he stops in his tracks, woozy.

SPIKE: Not now…
As the monster and Buffy struggle, a gout of blood blooms from Spike’s mouth. His eyes roll back, he grabs his head and falls over.
The monster turns and sees Spike helpless, then leaps off of Buffy and runs toward the easier prey.

BUFFY: Spike!
Spike lies flat on the floor, out cold, as the demon drags his body toward the rubble…

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

After battling a monster they meet up with a General that offers some help.

Buffy tosses rubble and bodies aside, digging for the creature that took Spike.
BUFFY: Spike?
She pushes over a computer monitor and reveals the monster, pulling an unconscious Spike into a dark, side corridor. The demon turns, looks at Buffy, and leaps at her. This time she’s ready. She uses the creature’s momentum against it and throws it to the floor. She lifts the computer monitor over her head and smashes it over the demon’s head. Buffy flips the monitor stand over and plunges the jagged end of the metal pole into the monster’s throat. It dies with a strangled moan. Buffy runs over to Spike and kneels next to him.
BUFFY: Hey, you still with us?
Spike mumbles something and smiles.
BUFFY: That guy was—
Suddenly the room is flooded with harsh bright light as floodlights kick on around the room. Above them, a catwalk is lined with soldiers, their weapons trained on Buffy and Spike.
BUFFY:— just the beginning.
SPIKE: (weak) What’s happening?
The commander of the unit, an ARMY GENERAL: , calls down to Buffy and Spike.
GENERAL: Ms. Summers. Agent Finn reported that you tried to contact him earlier today.
BUFFY: I knew it! Government conspiracy.
The general motions for the soldiers to lower their weapons.
GENERAL: He indicated you might be needing our assistance. We’re to provide you anything you need to help Assface here. (off her look) Those were his exact words, ma’am.

The Killer in Me
Episode 7, Season 13

Buffy is given the choice by Riley to decide what to do about Spike's chip. It's a big moment for Buffy and how/ she feels for Spike. Riley shows how he feels about Buffy by giving her the choice even though he can't stand Spike and especially not that Spike was sleeping with his former girlfriend, Buffy.

Later. Spike lies on a medical examining table, unconscious. Buffy watches over him as the general approaches.
GENERAL: Med team tells me they took a look at the chip. You were right. It’s degraded. Leave it as it is much longer, it’ll be fatal to him.
BUFFY: Okay, so how long until—
GENERAL: Now.
BUFFY: Right. Of course What do we do next?
GENERAL: Agent Finn said it was your call, ma’am.
BUFFY: (confused) My… what was my call?
GENERAL: All decisions regarding Hostile 17 are to be left in your hands. (off her look) This chip. We can either repair it… or remove it.

Giles and the gang findout that Spike no longer has his chip to prevent him from hurting people.

BUFFY , Giles, KENNEDY, AMANDA and a new potential Slayer, CHAO-AHN, patrol the cemetery. The younger girls all have stakes in their hands but
they aren’t focused on the dangerous darkness around them. They listen, riveted, as Giles continues his exciting story.

GILES: It was extraordinary good luck, of course, and training— years of training. Chao-ahn, keep up. You’re new here, Chao-ahn, so take notes. Remember about training. (to others) But I honestly feel the largest part of it was instinct. Instinct and reflexes. There’s a sort of wary watchfulness
I’ve developed over the years. It’s like another sense—
Giles is suddenly blindsided, tackled to the ground by SPIKE.
BUFFY: Spike!
Spike and Giles untangle themselves and get to their feet.
SPIKE:Hey! You’re not The First!
GILES:Hey! You’re not in pain!
GILES: (confused) What?
SPIKE: Anya said you were The First. Said you were evil. You’re supposed to be all… go-through-able.
GILES: Then why the hell did you tackle me, you berk? What was that supposed to do?
SPIKE: Yeah… didn’t think of that.
GILES: And, more importantly, you just hit me! Why didn’t your chip go off?
Everyone looks to Spike and Buffy who look away, uncomfortable.
SPIKE: Yeah, well…
BUFFY: Well, when we were at the Initiative…
SPIKE:… there was a choice.
BUFFY: Right. To either repair the chip or to remove it.
GILES: (incredulous) You had it removed? You removed the chip?
BUFFY: Yeah.
SPIKE: Had to make a choice.
BUFFY: It really is okay.
A beat of stunned silence.
AMANDA: What’s a chip?
KENNEDY: They removed the chip?
CHAO-AHN: (Cantonese; subtitle)
I don’t understand a word you are saying.
Opening credit sequence.

Giles confronts Buffy over the decision on removing Spike's chip.

Buffy dresses before the mirror in her room, trying on earrings, as Giles enters and stands in the doorway.
GILES: You know this is very dangerous.
BUFFY: You’ve just heard horror stories. Wear hoops, they’ll catch on something, rip your lobe off, lobes flying everywhere.
GILES: That’s not what I’m talking about.
BUFFY: You mean Spike not having a chip. Free-range Spike.
GILES: I have to ask. Why on earth did you make that decision?
BUFFY: I guess it was instinct, like you were talking about.
GILES: I made that up! I knew the Bringer was there because his shoes squeaked. Buffy, it’s crucial that we keep these girls safe and I can’t count the dangers: The First, the Bringers, random demons and now Spike?
BUFFY: And the principal.
GILES: What?
BUFFY: Oh, nothing much. He was in the school basement holding a shovel, acting kind of evasive. Plus he’s got that whole“ too charming to be real” thing going on. I’m looking into it.
GILES: Well, that sounds very responsible of you. Balances out the vampire-on-the-loose issue.
BUFFY: Nothing’s changed, Giles. Spike had a chip before, remember? When The First had him kill and sire all those people.
GILES: We have no idea if his chip was working then. A new chip might restrain him should The First attempt to activate him again.
BUFFY: Spike has a soul now. That’s what’s going to stop him from hurting people.
GILES: Buffy…
BUFFY: He can be a good man, Giles. I feel it. But he’s never going to get there if we don’t give him the chance.
GILES: (somber) Buffy, I want more for you. (off her look) Your feelings for him are coloring your judgment. I can hear it in your voice. And that way lies a future filled with pain. I don’t want that for you.
BUFFY: We haven’t… things have been different since he came back.
GILES: It doesn’t matter if you’re not physical with each other anymore. There’s a connection. You rely on him, he relies on you. That’s what’s affecting your judgment.
BUFFY: You think I’m losing sight of the big picture but I’m not. When Spike had that chip, it was like having him in a muzzle. It was wrong. We can’t beat evil by doing evil. I know that.
Buffy heads for the door.
GILES: Well, I hope you’re right. You’re gambling with a lot of lives.

Spike and Buffy talk about her date with Wood, some feelings get exposed.

Buffy exits into the hall, carrying her blouse. She runs into Spike and stops, slightly uncomfortable in her half-dressed state, then relaxes when she realizes he’s seen much more than that.
SPIKE: You look nice.
BUFFY: Oh, thanks. Traditionally, one wears something over this.
SPIKE: Heard you got a date.
Buffy casually covers herself with the stained blouse.
BUFFY: Well, it’s unclear. I have this whole theory about a promotion. Or he’s evil.
SPIKE: Buffy, I’m all right.
BUFFY: You don’t have to…
SPIKE: What? Be noble? I’m not. I really am all right. You think I still dream of a crypt for two with a white picket fence? My eyes are clear.
Buffy can’t help but feel slightly hurt.
BUFFY: (covers) Good. I’m glad. Thank you.
SPIKE: Never much cared for picket fences, anyway. Bloody dangerous.
BUFFY: You should try this, too. The going-out thing, I mean. There was that girl you brought to Anya and Xander’s not-a- wedding.
SPIKE: Oh, yeah, right. There’s always girls who like the look. Bad boy, you know, does it for some of them.
BUFFY: Yeah, I can see that. (beat) I… should go. I don’t want to be late.

Later. The room is dark and everyone is gone except Buffy. She sits on the sofa, deep in thought, as Spike enters and sits down next to her.
SPIKE: Anybody tell you about what happened around here tonight?
BUFFY: Willow did. The First is back in the mix.
SPIKE: It talked to the little boy. Said it wasn’t time for me yet. (beat) I should move out. Leave town. Before it is time for me.
BUFFY: No. You have to stay.
SPIKE: You got another demon fighter now.
BUFFY: That’s not why I need you here.
SPIKE: Is that right? Why’s that, then?
BUFFY: Because I’m not ready for you to not be here.
SPIKE: And the principal? How’s he fit in?
Buffy looks uneasily at him but doesn’t answer.

Wood and Spike meet and some sparks fly. This is after Wood finds out from The First Evil that Spike killed his slayer mother in 1977.

WOOD: I hope we’re not intruding.
SPIKE: Not a bit. And just what brings our good principal to this neck of the gloom?
BUFFY: I’m showing him our operation. Us.
SPIKE: (nods) Fine by me. Big fight against evil coming up. The more good guys we’ve got, the longer we’ll all live.
WOOD: Is that what you are? A good guy?
SPIKE: I haven’t heard any complaints. Well, I have heard a few complaints over the years but then I just killed whoever spoke up and that was pretty much that.
BUFFY: He’s joking.
WOOD: No, he’s not.
SPIKE: No, I’m not. But that’s the old me I’m talking about.
WOOD: Why don’t you tell me about that.
SPIKE: There’s not much to tell. I’ve changed.
WOOD: Oh. Now that you have a soul.
SPIKE: Yeah, that was a big deal. (to Buffy) Very private. What? Are you just telling everyone now?
WOOD: Oh, come on, Spike. Don’t blame Buffy. I asked.
Spike and Wood move toward each other, facing off, the tension between them crackling.
SPIKE: Right. The educator. (beat) Yeah, I went to great lengths, lots of trouble. Now I’m unique. Well, more or less. Got myself a soul… whatever that means.
WOOD: And how’s that working out for you?
SPIKE: In progress.
WOOD: Well, you’ve had some time. You’ve been in Sunnydale, what?
SPIKE: Years.
WOOD: How many?
SPIKE: A few.
WOOD: Before that?
SPIKE: Around.
Spike clenches his jaw and takes a step closer to Wood. Buffy sees what’s happening and intervenes.
BUFFY: I think we’d better get back upstairs.
Spike responds to her but keeps his eyes locked on Wood.
SPIKE: Right. Give him the full tour. (to Wood) You don’t want to miss a look at her weapons chest.
Wood stares hard at Spike for a beat, then follows Buffy up the stairs.

Get It Done
Episode 7, Season 15

Buffy challenges the group and confronts Spike on his changed attitude and fighting ability. She wants him back the way he was when they first met, him trying to kill her, all evil and dangerous.

This is similar in what Wesley tried to do with Faith in "Release" (AtS pisode 14, Season 4) when he wanted the old, blood thirsty slayer and not the present day version.

BUFFY: (to Anya) You’re here because you’re scared.
XANDER: Same goes for everyone in this room.
BUFFY: Fine. Anya, all of you, be as scared as you like, just be useful while you’re at it.
WILLOW: Come on, Buffy, you know everyone here is doing everything they can.
BUFFY: And The First isn’t impressed. It already knows us. It knows what we can do and it’s laughing. You want to surprise the enemy? Surprise yourselves. Force yourself to do what can’t be done or else we are not an army. We’re just a bunch of girls waiting to be picked off and buried.
Spike has had enough. He heads for the door.
BUFFY: Where are you going?
SPIKE: Out. Since I’m neither a girl nor waiting. All this speechifying doesn’t really apply to me, does it?
BUFFY: Fine. Take a cell phone. That way if I need someone to get weepy or wailed on I can call you.
Spike stops and turns back to her, amazed at her words.
SPIKE: If you’ve got something to say…
BUFFY: Just said it. You keep holding back, you might as well walk out that door.
SPIKE: Holding back? You’re blind. I’ve been here. Right in it. Fighting, scrapping—
BUFFY: Since you got your soul back?
SPIKE: Well, as a matter of fact, I haven’t been quite relishing the kill the way I used to.
BUFFY: You were a better fighter then.
SPIKE: I did this for you! The soul, the changes— it’s what you wanted!
BUFFY: What I want is the Spike that’s dangerous! The Spike that tried to kill me when we met.
SPIKE: Oh, you don’t know how close you are to bringing him out.
BUFFY: I’m nowhere near him. Dawn, get the potentials upstairs and break out that emergency kit.
DAWN: What are you going to do?
BUFFY: I’m declaring an emergency.
She walks out of the room without sparing Spike another glance.

Get It Done
Episode 7, Season 15

Spike gets his duster and puts it on again since he took it off after leaving Sunnydale to get his soul back.
This scene shows Spike getting back some of his attitude and edge that he lost since getting his soul back and trying to act like 'a regular guy' for Buffy.
Wood sees Spike for the first time wearing his mother's leather duster. The one that Spike took from her dead body just after he killed her in 1977 in a New York City metro car.

Spike tosses aside boxes and digs through piles of junk in Buffy's basement until he finds what
he’s looking for: his black leather duster.
He shrugs into it, straightens the collar and heads for the stairs.

CUT TO:SUNNYDALE HIGH— CORRIDOR—
Spike strides purposefully down the corridor. He passes Wood, standing in the doorway to his office.
WOOD: Where are you going?
SPIKE: Got a job.
WOOD: Nice coat. Where’d you get it?
SPIKE: New York.
Spike walks out the door leaving Wood staring hatefully after him.
